NFTs might not be as dead as they appear, despite being referred to as “dead” during the current crypto winter. Even though there have been many forecasts that Bitcoin will die, the atmosphere in the crypto world today is different. The market seems to be still alive, with Bitcoin trading at about $67,000 and approved spot Bitcoin ETF.
The obituaries are increasing, and NFTs are the subject of intense criticism these days. As stated in a recent Rolling Stone headline, “Your NFTs are actually — finally — totally worthless.” The majority of NFTs have indeed been deemed completely useless, but if you’ve seen previous cryptocurrency cycles, you shouldn’t be surprised by this.
NFTs suffer losses too, just like the ICO tokens from the 2017 bull market that died in the winter of 2018–19 and the countless DeFi protocol tokens after the DeFi summer of 2020. There are currently over 1.8 million tokens in circulation. The majority of tokens expire, and NFTs are no exception.
Due to the low barrier to entry for NFT projects, a frenzy of low-quality supply entered the market around the middle of 2021. This is the first real NFT winter, and the circumstances mirror those of past cycles.
Prominent individuals have subtly deleted their NFT Twitter avatars, and there has been less advertising for NFT. In mid-2021, NFT trade volumes were around $1 billion per week; currently, they are less than $100 million.
But NFTs are not “dead,” if you keep searching, you’ll find more and more indications of life. PayPal has submitted a patent application for a purchase-and-transfer NFT system. Meanwhile, NFT initiatives that connect digital and physical assets, such as Pudgy Penguins, Doodles, and Veefriends, are growing. Top auction houses are working with mainstream musicians in the NFT space, and even music legends like Justin Bieber are converting songs into NFTs that provide holders with revenue streams.
Neither blockchain nor the essential technological building blocks of what NFTs are and what they offer will “die.” They will just keep evolving, becoming just another footnote in another crypto cycle.
As we go from this NFT winter into a new season, you can expect to witness more advanced and financially feasible NFT projects, enhancing the ecosystem in new and significant ways.
